Ski Socks

A few things about ski socks:

First there is no ultimate ski sock, everyone's feet, boot fit, and skiing is different than everyone else. High performance skiers crank their boot buckles down to the point of cutting off circulation. Other more casual skiers prefer a more comfortable ride. People have all sorts of odd shaped feet, and the ski boot is going to be fitted in some fashion. It could be a stiff new performance boot or a packed in old friend, it may be a rental. Some people work and perspire more, and some, not so much. There is no ultimate sock that's right for everyone.

Heated socks are a poor solution to an already solved problem. They make more sense in a home scenario or for hiking, but on the slopes: invest in boot heaters. Boots have better places to hold the battery securely, don't need daily washing and can swap out parts if a component breaks. Our approach is let the sock be replaceable. It would suck to invest in heated socks only to find out you don't like the thickness, or a seam rests wrong on your toe, or the wires are uncomfortable.

Replacement socks are the way to go, be they nylon, wool, or cotton, based, you want them to be cheap enough to have fresh ones regularly. If you spend a fortune on the ultimate socks you'll be reluctant to toss them when they stop supporting your foot. It may have no more support left but hey it's Cashmere Wool! and only has one hole!

An amateur mistake is to pile heavy socks on to be warm, but this is counterproductive. For us Mammals our warmth comes from our blood flow and when you add too much thickness in your boot you run the risk of compressing the blood vessels in your foot leading to reduced blood flow and colder feet. The boot liner is a thick layer of insulation, boot heaters can be added if desired, and boot sleeves work well also. The point is your socks don't act alone to keep you warm. Spreading the job around gets better results and allows more sock options for a more comfortable fit.
